Affordable Housing: Waltham on the Wolds

Client: Platform Housing

Burmor Construction has been appointed by Platform Housing to design and construct a scheme of 26 dwellings consisting of a mixture of 1, 2, and 3 bed shared ownership and affordable rent units. Burmor Construction has been instructed upon the site receiving full planning permission with conditions which required discharging during the design phase.

The site is a greenfield area of land hidden off the High Street in Waltham on the Wolds, a rural Leicestershire village about 5 miles north-east of Melton Mowbray. The external materials and features have been carefully chosen to be sympathetic to the character of Waltham on the Wolds while at the same time considering maintenance and lifespan which are essential for the client. Reconstituted stone, cant cills to windows, brick quoins some features which have been chosen to replicate existing architectural features within the village.

The construction of the units consists of trench fill foundations with a sand & cement screed on 150mm deep precast concrete floor beam together with a precision cut solid core polystyrene panels.

The polystyrene suspended floor provides significant improvements in the thermal efficiency of the building, compared to a standard beam & block system. Masonry walls with a timber first floor construction and prefabricated timber trussed roof completes the structure of the building. Roof finishes are a mix of red pantiles and grey concrete tiles.

All dwellings are to be finished with fully fitted kitchens and bathrooms in accordance with the client’s design guide and specification.

The site manager for this project is Glen Smith.
